EIGHTEEN

ADAMS

“Is that it?” asked Adams

They were parked on a side street, the entrance to the old subway stop just visible around the corner. The commuter lot was empty and the entrance barricaded with yellow tape.

“There are staircases before you get to the tunnels,” said Megan.

The entrance was a single set of double doors and the building little more than a header for the staircase. This section of the subway had been plagued with flooding and had been closed for years. It didn’t look like it had seen much traffic even before it was shut down.

“Everyone ready?” said Hamel.

Megan was first out the door, followed by Eli, and Adams wondered what the hell he was thinking. They whispered to each other in the dusk of the lane and Adams couldn’t lift his hand to the door or do anything to put this mission in motion.

He was going to be that fool who didn’t learn from his mistakes. He’d taken Camille to the treatment center, exposing her to a danger that he hadn’t suspected. Now, how could he know what waited for them in those tunnels?

“We need to move,” said Hamel. He stood in the open door, fully outfitted in his combat gear. Megan and Eli stood behind him in jeans and hoodies and equipped with flashlights.

“This is wrong,” said Adams.

Hamel tucked an extra magazine onto his belt.

“Yes,” said Hamel. He stepped out of the door and closed it almost completely. “Now let’s go.”

Adams followed him into the morning cold, the gray light not reaching their parking spot. He and Hamel wore mariner’s ball caps in an effort to slow down the facial recognition. The kids had their hoods pulled up. As they walked into the commuter lot, they did their best to look like a family on an outing in the middle of an industrial zone.

Eli didn’t even have to try. He ran straight to the double doors and rattled the chain holding them shut. Megan followed more slowly, stepping around the yellow tape, and Hamel and Adams pretended to wave Eli away. Old parking meters edged the side of the parking lot closest to the entrance, and a digital ticket kiosk was still mounted to the wall. Megan pushed a few buttons and pressed the touch screen.

Hamel joined Eli and tested the doors. Adams still pretended to wave them away. Megan pushed Eli out of the way and he pushed back, possibly not hard enough, and then the two of them were doing a good job of looking like a brother and sister scrapping over nothing at all.

While Hamel pretended to discipline them, Adams made a quick cut to the chain with the bolt cutters. In less than three seconds they were inside, with the door chained shut on the inside. Megan and Eli were already halfway down the first flight of stairs, with Hamel close behind. A white wrapper reflected light in the parking lot, caught in a tuft of grass pushing up through a crack.

He had expected soldiers.
